At the beginning of May I had a really great streak of like, a whole week of unbroken comic work--one page a day penciled no problem. Now I'm up to page, uh... twelve? So halfway to the end, and I've stalled. My brain just doesn't want to cooperate with me right now, so all I can do is go along with it and hope it clicks back into place once it's done playing with whatever toys it wants to play with. Right now it really wants to work on a Bonanza Bros x Space Channel 5 comic, which isn't bad, but like...my original comic is right there! I need that done! It's time sensitive!

Anyway, I'm still well within my personal deadline (August 31st; SPX is September 12-13) so it's not a big deal, just frustrating.

It's is my birthday today!!! I am 37 years old, which is crazy to think about, so I'm not going to think about it. (emotionless deadpan voice) Shooting Star Emorji

Instead, I'm going to talk about the craft of writing. There was a post on bslueky earlier today about making a world, which (I'm paraphrasing) basically said "you need to leave gaps in the world and exposition for the viewer to fill in their own imagination. It's this that gives story worlds their richness." I agree with that entirely, but wanted to go into my own experiences a bit.

So I ordered the US pomera and got it, and am currently writing on it. It feels perfect and I think this is the gadget that's actually going to fix me this time <--clueless

Anyway, I've been working on stuff for SPX. I printed out more copies of Incumbency Skeleton (the "scary story for elected officials" faux-children's book that my husband and I made) and am going to start assembling those. Basically, I'm aiming for 30-ish copies of everything: three Electricopolis volumes, Bonanza Bros. comics 1 and 2, and three volumes of Aporia, my videogames zine. So that's eight times thirty which is 240 books, not counting business cards, cash box, point of sale system etc. I think that's reasonable; I'd be happy if I sell out, which is very possible given how many people go to SPX.

I'm also waiting on my MiSTER FPGA system, the Superstation One. (It's a machine that runs many kinds of video games through a programmable chip rather than just emulating stuff via software. It is very cool.) I've been antsy seeing other people get theirs but I think mine will be a few weeks out still. I've been keeping busy by making NFC cards that can be used to launch games on my computer and also on the Superstation once I get it. TAke a look, yall:

big news on my world!!! GUESS WHO GOT INTO SPX!!!

this is crazy honestly. I thought I wouldn't get in because I only have like Two comics on my itch and both of those are fanwork, but I do have a lot of zines and prints and other stuff... I'll have to get crackin' on printing more copies!!

To-do list:
- clear off dining room table and clean up surrounding environs so I have a better space to work
- take stock of inventory
- figure out how many copies i need to order for bbros books/aporia 2 and order them from catprint
- figure out how many more copies i need to make by hand for aporia 1, 3, electricopolis volumes, incumbency skeleton
- once all that's done: lay out electricopolis zine volume 3 (Voice on the Radio)... 👁️

new toy time

so I really love my pomera word processor, like I said a few entries ago--but the thing that really trips me up about it is that the Japanese keyboard layout is JUST different enough that it really trips me up right when I get into a writing groove. So I've actually been looking for an affordable US version of the machine for a while, and I found one today! Someone was selling it on eBayfor $100 off retail price, and that plus a $100 gift card brought it down to a mere... uh... three hundred and fifty dollars before tax and shipping. It's fine. it's fine!!!

Anyway I bought it so I will probably be selling my JP pomera sometime soon. It's a great writing tool but, again, the keyboard layout. That's really the only problem with it though, because everything else can be easily turned to English and functions perfectly fine, so if you can adjust then I wholeheartedly recommend a JP pomera because they're way cheaper than their US counterparts.

So it's been a minute! I say that every time, probably. But the warm weather is making me and everyone else I know feel way better, so let's do a blogpost while the blogging is good.

Various things are happening:

I started a group for doujinshi creators and other doujin works-minded folks, Doujin Freaks! Please feel free to join if you're interested. I have a bunch of members and I'm slowly trying to gather more and talk to other organizers.

Kind of related, I entered the SPX table lottery. Pretty sure I won't get in since I'm not 100% certain I'm actually eligible--I do have some comics on my itch but they're like, fan comics, and most of the other stuff is games or illustrated short stories, which don't count. I wish illustrated short stories did count, since they're self published and by definition they are small press and belong in an expo, but what do I know?

I've been practicing working in HIMI jelly gouache--a kind of goopy entry level gouache paint--recently. It has kind of solidified my belief that I really just don't get along with most kinds of paints. I'm way more of an illustrator than a painter, but boy, when paint works, you feel like a genius. I'll post some of my work soon.

I've been taking care of my mom several times a week in order to give my dad an outlet so he doesn't explode from taking care of her and getting frustrated. I keep trying to convince him to hire a home health aide ~but he woooooon't~

So the good news is that I got a prescription for something that will hopefully actually Do Shit (Enberil injectable). The bad news is that Walgreens says the price without insurance is $9,789. Which is like, does that mean insurance won't cover it, or does it mean that it will cover it but it hasn't been factored in yet? I will call my insurance tomorrow and figure it out even though I am just a simple tempura shrimp.

Anyway I also spontaneously turned into my friend washy and downloaded both Care Bears films, The Chipmunk Adventure, and Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer. Perhaps I will hold a 1980s age regression film marathon in my server sometime soon.

Also like, I know this is My Space and all that but I feel compelled to apologize for never posting about anything fun. Next post will be Bonanza Bros. headcanons or something.

pomera again

Messing around with my pomera DM250 again. Part of me wonders if I should have saved my pennies for a US layout one, but the one I got (a Japanese layout one) was cheaper off of eBay, so what can you do? The little differences in the keyboard layout kind of throw me off, but it's okay as long as I don't think about it too hard and rely on my years of touch-typing experience. (For the record, the pomera is a distraction-free typing device kind of like a Freewrite but with a better screen and less latency.)

Here's what it looks like in action!

Umm, what else... so far I've just been kind of faffing about in the new year, although I actually have gotten some stuff done.I made a new appointment for my rheumatologist and also to get a new eye exam, and I've started doing preliminary work on [secret project] as well... hopefully I will have more to talk about on that soon, but it's kind of on the back burner until I can walk again with less pain.

I actually went to the ER today because I've been taking 4000mg of tylenol every day for months and was worried this was the day it finally caught up to me--turns out I am fine but I should be taking half that. But that means my various agonies will hurt me more. Ah well

So, it's a new year! Resolutions include...

Getting all my boxed up donation stuff actually donated
Cleaning out my workroom closet so my partner doodler can use it for their books
And a secret third resolution that I will announce when/if I feel comfortable doing so. Basically I want to start a Cool New Venture but I have to do more research on it first...

Maybe I should have like, sidequests too. Fun things that are optional but cool to do, like...

Drink more tea
Watch more new films
Paint my nails more often (I just got some cool new colors from ILNP and I've gotten into nail art lately)

That said, I should probably give myself a pat on the back for all the things I did do in 2025!

I finished a new Bonanza Bros. comic book, High Society! I have to actually get it printed now, but I've been dragging my heels on it.
I finished up the third season of Electricopolis, but I think I'm going to amend that and make the first story of season 4 the last one of season 3...
I, uh, lost the ability to walk. Then kind of regained it. But I'm still in a lot of pain so I gotta talk to the doctor. Still, I've worked very hard, and I've lost some weight as well. So that last part is good at least

Slow going

This one isn't typewritten because I am away from my typewriter, and because nowadays I have to weigh every instance of walking or getting up in pros and cons like "is it really worth it to walk all the way there and put up with that pain?"

As you can tell, I'm still in a lot of pain and walking is really difficult. I'm on methotrexate now, which can take up to 6 weeks to start working, so let's hope it doesn't take that long. It also means I can't take my usual 3 ibuprofen + 2 tylenol cocktail, so I'm down to just the 2 tylenol. I'm using Extended Release Arthritis Tylenol but it seems worse than before? Whatever man. I'm so sick of this.

Mom is doing...better, I think. She's been transferred to an inpatient rehab facility where they have her doing exercises and therapy a lot, so she's a lot more in tune and engaged with the world. There are moments where she isn't "here" (as she puts it), but she seems to be solidifying a little bit, if you get me.

On the whole, things are like...going? but at a glacial pace it seems.

Because it's never too late for a resolution, my new resolution is to lock the fuck in and structure my day more mindfully. So far I want to have a Morning Routine, which is (maybe not in this exact order):

wake up at 8am so I can see my partners off for work

do radio taiso

eat breakfast

take a shower if needed

take medicine at 9am

go do aqua exercises at the pool (once a week, to start)

rest after exercise

do a light chore

That brings me pretty much up to 12 noon, where I eat lunch and then work on creative work (drawing or writing, alternately) for the afternoon, then I can do whatever I like.

There are a couple wrinkles in this, though... my medicine makes me sleepy 30 minutes after I take it, so I need to probably take it right before I do aqua exercise, otherwise I'll be tired at the start of it. I guess I could take it afterwards, but then I get tired later. Further experimentation is needed.

Today I have successfully done everything except the aqua exercises, which I pushed off until Wednesday because I took a shower, and I feel like taking a shower then immediately going into a chlorinated pool probably isn't great for my hair. So I'll just wait a day or two. It'll be fine. I just hope I don't get too derailed in two days or something...

so I've been bitten by the horsegirl game bug and started playing Umamusume: Pretty Derby, I don't know anything about any of these girls except that Gold Ship apparently is really good, but I pulled Symboli Rudolf early on so I'm progressing through career mode with her at the moment. My only other horse racing game exposure is Game Freak's Pocket Card Jockey, which is half horse racing and half solitaire, so this has been a real departure for me.

It might actually also be the first real in-depth character raising sim I've played, too? I'm really enjoying it so far, and it's nice that it's on both steam and mobile so I can force all my friends to watch me play horse game on discord.

Oh btw, we finished comedy route on hundo line and started doing a different one that is much better so far lol. love regained with hundred line

the hundred line frustrations

man, the hundred line is a rough one. it starts off really promising with a prologue that lasts thirty hours and sets up some really cool time travel stuff, and plenty of questions to be answered, and then blows the game wide open with 100 different endings and tons of unique interactions. The game has remarkably little repeated dialogue (less than you'd expect for a game that lasts a hundred days--mostly the repeated stuff is sirei's recordings every day), but for all the writing it has, it just feels really empty and boring???

it's really disheartening because i love the characters so much! maybe we just got really bad routes???

anyway we are actually really enjoying the game, sorry if it comes off like we aren't, but it's just a little frustrating to still be just scratching the surface of a story after putting literally 50 hours into it.......

(Not in any particular order, but inspired by this IGN list)

FINAL FANTASY FREE SPACE because everyone is different and beautiful. V if you're nasty like me

CHRONO TRIGGER, I know it's overdone but listen: you have a dream team of developers here at the top of their game, you have a story that takes some really ballsy twists and turns, and you have probably the best implementation of time travel in a video game. You gotta give credit where it's due: this is a very good game. (I think the story takes a strange/tonally different turn after zeal shows up though)

EARTHBOUND. I promise we'll get into weirder shit soon. If you've played it, you know what I'm talking about; if you haven't played it, it genuinely is that good. Go in blind if you can, esp regarding the final boss.

MYSTIC ARK. Here we go. Mystic Ark is a spiritual successor to 7th Saga where all your companions are Odd Figurines that you stick in your bag when you're not using them, and the game is largely about exploring an abandoned, melancholy island that you wake up on. You also explore a bunch of strange miniature worlds with interesting storylines. Give it a try, it's got two fan translations. It's very good and close to my heart.

DRAGON QUEST IV has an absolutely banger cast of characters and story structure. The original NES version is the one I recommend because I can't stand the newer translation. If you've never played DQ, give this one a try; it's not actually all that grindy, despite DQ's reputation.

I was suddenly struck with the thought the other day that I could be a selfshipper if I wanted. I usually avoid selfshipping because of 1) internalized self-loathing and 2) the notion that "nobody wants to see that shit" (see (1)), so this was really novel for me. Then it started me thinking about how I usually interact with fictional characters, on the rare occasions that I make an appearance in my works.
